David Barr Kirtley's
short fiction appears in magazines such as
Realms of Fantasy,
Weird Tales,
and On Spec, and in various anthologies.
His young adult fiction appears in magazines such as
Cicada,
READ, and Merlyn's Pen.
His story "Save Me Plz" was selected by editor Rich Horton for the
2008 edition of the anthology series Fantasy: The Best of the Year.
A screenplay adaptation David wrote of his story "Lest We Forget" was
shot as a short film and shown at the New York Independent Film and
Video Festival.
David has been profiled as part of "Speculative Fiction: The Next Generation"
by Novel & Short Story Writer's Market. He was the second-youngest writer selected for the
anthology New Voices in Science Fiction. As a freshman, he won first prize in the Dell Magazines Award
for undergraduate science fiction, given by Asimov's magazine.
He has appeared five times as a guest instructor at the
Alpha Workshop for Young Writers, and is available for free
public appearances in the Los Angeles area.
He grew up in Katonah, New York and majored in Government at Colby College. He has studied writing with many well-known figures, including
T.C. Boyle (The Road to Wellville),
Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game),
Karen Joy Fowler (The Jane Austen Book Club),
Irvin Kershner (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back),
and Janet Fitch (White Oleander).
David is the son of Buckley prize-winning physicist
John R. Kirtley.
David currently lives in Los Angeles and is a graduate student in screenwriting and fiction at
USC.
